AFD Group has been operating in Chad since the country’s independence (1960). Projects are supervised by the N’Djamena agency.
Volume of activities
AFD commitments from 2002 to 2007 stood at €79.6M, including 10% for structural adjustment on behalf of the State in 2003 and 73% for project aid. The relevant economic sectors included water and sanitation, which accounted for over half the financing (42%), the social sectors of education and health (27%), agriculture and food security (18%), infrastructure and urban development (11%).
Disbursements during the same period stood at €82.4M. In 2007 disbursements (€10.8M) were made in the water and sanitation sector, which accounted for over half of the total amount (66%), agriculture and food security made up a fifth (21%) and disbursements were also made for health and the fight against AIDS (7%).
Intervention sectors
AFD has traditionally operated in Chad’s cotton sector (€100M between 1986 and 1997), telecommunications (€23M for the same period), the Chad water and electricity company (STEE, €36M before its privatization began in 1999) and sugar via SONASUT, the national sugar company.
Outlook
As a result of the concentration sectors defined for the period 2006-2010 AFD will be operating in the following sectors:
