The electronic forum will debate issues to be addressed at the international conference on the topic “Who will feed the world?” Towards diverse, sustainable forms of agriculture as drivers of development. The conference is organized by the French Presidency of the Council of the European Union in partnership with the European Commission and the European Parliament and will be held at the European Parliament in Brussels on 3 July 2008.

Conference participants will receive a summary of the electronic debates and extracts will be read out by the conference moderator.

You will be able to join in the debate and directly receive input from members. A weekly summary of the debates will be sent to you.

Between 15 April and 30 May 2008 you will be sent six questions by e-mail. There will be two three-week sessions:

Session 1: Agriculture as a driver for growth and development (22 April to 9 May)

1- What are the opportunities and risks for local production within the context of expanding global markets?
2- Can family farms provide employment for young rural workers?
3- How can agriculture help protect the environment?

Session 2: What regional or global governance should there be for agriculture? (12 May to 30 May)

4- What are the roles of professional organizations in market management (a cornerstone of agricultural policies)?
5- What international regulation could reconcile the interests of the world’s farmers?
6- North-South partnerships: what are the common issues? What new forms of partnership can be built between agricultural stakeholders.
