Hann Bay has the world’s second largest beach after Rio and was once the pride of Dakar’s inhabitants. Yet it is now completely polluted by cargo boats discharging into the sea and industries discharging their waste and wastewater. The scarcity of fish means that fishermen have to go further and further out to sea. Diseases such as diarrhea, pneumonia and bronchitis are on the rise… Inhabitants’ and business associations are, however, beginning to mobilize against this scourge and Agence Française de Développement has decided to finance a far-reaching industrial depollution program – a first for Senegal.

The whole country is affected by the lack of drinking water and sanitation. Senegal set out to tackle the problem by implementing the Millennium Drinking Water and Sanitation ¨Program (Pepam) with the aim of reaching the Millennium Development Goals by 2015. While nearly all city dwellers may now have drinking water, a third of Senegalese still do not have access to sanitation systems. Many women in the countryside still manually draw water from the wells. Infrastructure is not everything: it is imperative for populations to get involved. Senegal’s authorities are trying to raise awareness about the need to adopt the right gestures, avoid wastage and ensure the best possible use is made of water.
