The conflict between sedentary farmers and nomad livestock raisers is a core economic and social issue in Chad. Livestock raisers from the barren North have for centuries driven their cattle towards the South to more fertile agricultural regions. Farming has become more intensive as a result of demographic growth and increases conflicts between farmers and livestock raisers.

AFD has been supporting pastoral water projects in Chad for nearly 15 years. “Almy al Afia” (Water for Peace) is one such project and has been implemented in Central Chad with support from specialized operators such as Iram-Antea. The project opens up new pastures by creating new water points and negotiated transhumance corridors and consequently delays the arrival of herds in cultivated areas. This results in a marked reduction in conflicts in areas where confrontations have traditionally taken place.
