Based on the book
« Une mer sans poissons » ( A sea without fish)
( Philippe Cury and Yves Miserey, 04/2008, Ed. Calmann-Lévy)

(metro Gare de Lyon)

« Seen from the shore the sea may still appear to be “dancing across clear-blue bays” but beneath the surface a tragedy is unfolding: mankind has consumed so much of the sea that it is dying.
Over the past 150 years, far from sight, resources once thought to be abundant have been pushed to the edge by overfishing. Over a hundred million tons of fish are caught in the world every year. By fishing further, deeper and now “smaller” man is turning the oceans into a liquid desert. State-of-the-art ships and technologies leave the fish no chance. All boats, from factory ships to dugout canoes, now catch species that were thought to be inaccessible or not fit for consumption. This type of plundering is systematic and indiscriminate since it is extremely difficult to select which species are caught.
The pace of this has been so fast that species that were once links in the marine food chain have already completely disappeared. This will eventually lead to an alarming imbalance in the whole marine ecosystem.

About the book...

The sudden and irreversible collapse of fishery resources is no longer a hypothesis based on pure fantasy.
The review made by Une mer sans poissons gives cause for concern because it is factual and based on comprehensive documentation that often has not been published in French. Once we have read it we will not be able to say we did not know.
